Conversion Description

The sprinter was ordered with a huge specification on which to build a custom off grid camper truck. It was decided early on to keep the electrics of the truck completely separate from the living van electrics therefore the heavy duty alternator only charges the heavy duty truck battery for starting and running. All of the living vans 12v electrics, lighting, pumps, heating blower, and refrigeration are powered by a Victron Easi Solar system; this controls the solar input from 6 roof mounted panels which charge 2 x 180 amp hour Victron gel batteries. The unit is fitted with 240v external input charging and has a 1600w 240v inverter. This unit also monitors the state of the battery charging by what ever means.

The living van spec is driver and passenger, high spec seats with arms rests, passenger seat swivels to face into the living van. Insulated curtain partition between cab and living area, a solid iroko timber kitchen with hot and cold water sink, fresh water tap with Doulton 3 ceramic filter, single burner hob with glass folding cover, a dometic cfx-35 top opening refrigerator and part freezer, extractor fan over the cooking surface, storage areas above and below, all doors fitted with twist locks; this wall of the van continues as a series of storage cupboards and lockers one of which houses the easi solar control unit at eye level with the master switches and fuse board directly above. In the lockers below these cupboards the batteries are housed at floor level and pull out of a vented storage on a rack for ease of handling which locks into position securely. In the ceiling above is fitted a multi functional electrical fan with ceiling level led lighting. There is also 12v sockets, charging points and 240v external supply and inverted.

The bed is currently a wide single fold up which has been designed so that this could be fitted with a 1.20m mattress and that this would still fold up giving a large seating area. Under the bed is further storage, under this the 2 water tanks and pumps for hot and cold system, filtered drinking water, all of this is fitted inside the insulated living van envelope.

An internal tail door opens into a WC area with a fitted simple cassette type toilet and wash hand basin with a shower hose to the outside of the back door. This area has a fitted ceiling extractor fan. Another external shower is fitted to be used at the side door under the awning that slides into a slide fitted to the roof to make a weather proof area to sit outside the van. There is also an external gas point for a hob to be used outside, 240v electric supply and 12v dc.

The roof is fitted with a full length super light weight roof rack with alloy tread plate support for the 6 x 600 x 600 solar panels, tread plate side walks and tail luggage area accessed by back ladder attached to one of the rear doors. One of the spare wheels is attached to a custom made rear door hinged carrier, the other fixed flat on the roof.

The van is fitted with a set of Terra Wagon Body protection throughout and step ups to the doorways.

We have been working on this van, on and off, for 2 years and it is not quite completed but we are offering it for sale thinking that anyone wanting to buy it may like to just bolt the solar panels to the roof, run the water pipes from the fitted tanks through the pumps just to see how it all works and then on their travels understand the installation and the necessary maintenance required. We are about to fit the doughnut gas tank under the rear area where the spare wheel was.

I am happy to show the truck to anybody who is interested and discuss that that wants to be finished and fitted and demonstrate the extraordinary capability of this wonderful truck.
