Big Tony: Bespoke, Reliable and Beautifully Hand-Crafted

Detailed Information
Vehicle Description

It is with a heavy heart that we offer the opportunity to get your hands on our pride and joy; an incredibly reliable and lovable campervan: Big Tony. Due to our family growing at a faster rate than we anticipated we are being forced to sell up and start the whole process again, this time with a caravan!

Big Tony is a carefully and lovingly converted campervan providing ample space and comfort for 2 adults and 1 child. Where practical, reclaimed materials have been used to create bespoke hand-crafted furniture, giving a vintage farmhouse feel.

The living space is designed in two sections, with an incredibly comfortable U-shaped sofa providing a lovely lounging space and the kitchen area positioned directly behind the cab, the high-roof meaning that a sub-six-footer can easily stand while cooking up a storm on the 2-burner hob, set into a custom driftwood countertop, build from wood salvaged from Hayburn Wyke beach in North Yorkshire.

The sink has a 12V tap and 25L containers for clean and waste water.

Big Tony has lots and lots of natural light thanks to the 360 windows and sunroof. Most of the windows open to allow for a breeze on those balmy British summer days.

A reclaimed pine table easily clips onto the seating area to provide a very comfortable dining area for three (or a cosy dining area for 4!). This can also be used as a very handy outdoor coffee-table, at perfect height for a glass of wine and game of cards. The sofa houses loads of storage space for all your knick-knacks and easily converts into a super king sized bed when you’ve finished all the beers or wine from the 3-way 60L Electrolux fridge-freezer.

The cab provides 3 belted seats and a superb driving position. Big Tony is incredibly easy-to-drive even with his long wheel base and high roof.

Lighting for the evening is provided by super-efficient LED spotlights, with separate “bedside” spotlights at the rear of the seating area for the bookworms among you. A 230V reclaimed pipe lamp is permanently installed above the fridge to provide soft lighting for those long summer evenings.

The 110Ah leisure battery provides days worth of use without the need to charge, although a 230V hookup (with 10m cable and European connector for the jetsetters) is provided and will charge the leisure battery, as well as being charged by the starter battery while the engine is running.

All electrical systems were installed by an electrical engineer friend of ours, at the great expense of a takeaway and a night’s stay up in Whitby with us.

The gas system for the 2 burner hob and 3-way fridge was installed and signed off by an engineer from Abbey Gas in Whitby. We’ll even throw in an almost-full propane bottle that should last you a good couple of years!

We bought and converted Big Tony in 2014. We were drawn to the LDV Convoy for several reasons, including that it houses a 2.4L turbo diesel Ford Transit engine, one of the most reliable and common van engines available.

Big Tony’s previous life was as a school minibus, hence the extremely low mileage. Despite long periods of inactivity while we have owned him, the engine has started first time every time and he has passed his MOT with flying colours each year, with the latest MOT valid until June 2021.

The interior of the van was fully rust-proofed and insulated after being stripped of seating and stays lovely and cool on hot days as well as keeping the cold out during spring or autumntime camping.

The max vehicle weight has been down-classified to 3500kg so Big Tony can be driven on a regular UK driving license and it has been re-classified with the DVLA as a campervan (which makes your insurance cheaper!)

If you’re interested in viewing, we live in Malaysia but my mother will be happy to show you the van in sunny Whitby, North Yorkshire. Make sure to grab some fish and chips from Fusco’s on Baxtergate when you visit.
