Bella - The Original Quirky Camper

Detailed Information
Vehicle Description

Bella is a 1999 Mercedes Sprinter. She has a non-turbo, pre CDI 2.3 litre diesel engine which was fully reconditioned in 2015 when the mileage was 202k (at a cost of £3k).

So, although the overall mileage is high at 254k, the current engine has under 60k on it and is in great nick. She starts first time every time, no matter how cold, and has no issues to report. The clutch was replaced in 2017 and throughout our ownership we have serviced her frequently and regularly and kept her in top condition.

At the beginning of this year she had a major refresh of her body work (costing £1.6k) which is now looking fantastic but as with any vehicle there are still a few rust spots and it is something that needs regular attention. Typically, we have spent £700 every 2 or 3 years on body work but this has included bumps and bruises from rentals. Also in Jan 2020 along with a full service and fresh MOT we replaced all the brakes pads and discs.

There are of course lots of little things that are not 100% and I would want to fix if we were keeping her. For example the passenger doors needs a bit of a slam (or adjusting:), fog light switch is damaged (still works), front speakers sometimes cuts out (new ones recommended).

Engine Size: 2.3 l
Fuel: Diesel
Fuel Efficiency: 25mpg
Transmission: Manual
Gears: 5
MOT till Jan 2021

History of servicing and repair receipts can be provided from about 2014 onwards on request.
Note: The stickers shown in the photos (vines leaves, flowers and Hire Me etc) have been removed in the recent respray. These are easily replace from the wonderful HippyMotors

Conversion Description

It is with very mixed feelings that we are listing our beloved Bella for sale. Bella is the original Quirky Camper and has been with us since the very beginning. We are selling because our little family has outgrown her and we are in the process of converting something that is better suited to a growing 6 year old and two 4 year olds.

Lindsay and I bought Bella in 2007 in the early days of our courtship, and over that summer converted her from a panel van into a basic but cosy campervan. Through our 20s she took us all over Europe, to many festivals, and to an ever increasing number of weddings.

In 2010 we smartened her up, finished off many remaining details and bought the domain which consisted of a couple of pages and a contact form….the rest as they say is history.

Over the years as we have learnt more about campervan conversions and our family has grown, so too has Bella’s functionality. She now has a very neat canvas cab bunk which can sleep a child up to 10 years of age (or approx. 60kg), a king size (massive) bed which can comfortably accommodate 2 adults and 1 child and 5 belted seats (2 fold away rear facing and 3 in the front).

The fridge is a small but top quality thermo electric fridge with low power consumption, water is stored in a 50 litre underslung tank which supplies an electric tap with a Sureflow pressure operated pump. Power is in stored in a leisure battery which is charged from a 120w solar panel on the roof or a split charge relay from the engine when it is running. There is a sink and 2 burner hob supplied with gas from a 907 CampingGaz bottle in a gas locker accessible from the back door and a handmade woodburner which warms up the space any time of year.

The walls and ceiling are insulated with sheep’s wool and lined with 4 and 9 plywood. The kitchenette, cupboards and table are carved from chunks of 18mm marine ply which gives the contoured effect and this has been treated with yacht varnish. The carving is a very time-consuming process but worth it 😊. The porthole window in the back is made from an old washing machine door that we found in a skip.

Bella’s internal paintwork could do with a refresh have been last done early in 2018 but we thought that was best left to her new owners to choose their colours.

Rental: Bella has always been popular and reliable, and Quirky Campers would be happy to continue to list her. However, anyone buying her with rental in mind should be aware that hiring out vehicles of this age comes with ongoing costs and higher risk of breakdown. She can still pay her way but the cost of maintaining a vehicle of this ages creeps up at the years go.

We would love Bella to continue her story with a new family, she would be ideally suit suited to a solo traveller, a couple or a family with 1 or 2 children. It has taken us a long time make this decision simply because it’s not really what we want to do, but sadly we just don’t have the space with the new addition (Frida).

Please email or call to arrange a viewing. If you would like to take her away for a couple of nights to test this can be arranged at a cost of £105/night to be refunded if you buy her. However she will be sold on a first come first served basis and any future arranged viewings or trips will be cancelled/refunded.

Many thanks for reading ~ David and Lindsay
