Vehicle Description

This is Gladness, our beloved vintage coach. Since we bought her in 2015 she has been fully restored and converted into our home on wheels. Living full time, as well as running our business from her, she has taken us throughout the UK and Europe- she has been amazing. It’s an extremely difficult decision to be selling her but our work commitments are taking us more regularly within the London low emission zone.

The bus is a great size for a couple to live in full time, and can comfortably accommodate two couples (with as much privacy as a motorhome can provide!) with both a king size and a double bed at each end of the bus. She would also suit a family, and we have been told many times over that this bus conversion would make a great AirBnb or glamping experience. She is a ready-to-go business opportunity for someone with a bit of land; no planning permission would be needed as it’s not a permanent structure.

As a coach, she has been in several liveries in her lifetime and even spent some time in the Beith Transport museum. We found her in Belgium in late 2015, brought her back to the UK and committed to having her fully restored at a specialist coach restoration company, Cobus in Scarborough. The main metal framing and all the body panels have been replaced. We also had the alternator and diesel fuel pump rebuilt, fitted a new rear differential and prop shaft, cleaned the main airline from compressor to tanks, full strip down of all the brakes, several hoses, filters, etc. We always maintain regular services and keep all the joints greased. She was properly undercoated before being freshly re-sprayed in 2017. We have really looked after this bus with no expenses spared.

The renowned Bedford 330 turbo 5ltr engine is solid, and its simplicity means it can easily be worked on with only a small amount of mechanical knowledge, and in any country. The bus has power steering, air assisted brakes, a great turning radius, two captains chairs for that comfortable ride, with one chair on a swivel base. Anyone can legally drive the bus on a normal car licence due to it being an ex public service vehicle, exempting it from some weight restrictions. More info on this can be found by searching the internet for INF52, the official UK government’s policy.

There is room for another 3/4 belted seats along the back sofa, and they can be easily installed if need be.

Conversion Description

The solar power system provides more than enough power for us to easily run our film-making business and continuously use the fridge/lights etc. The bus has both 230v (via the 3000watt Pure Sine Wave inverter) and 12v power system. It easily supports the regular use of normal household appliances like the fridge, iron, hairdryer, portable hoover etc. All this power is stored in a battery bank (4x 12v 130amp) in the boot and all the power is generated by 2x 245w solar panels on the roof controlled through the 40amp mttp controller. The 4 agm 12v batteries are under warranty until August 2021. The bus also has the option for mains hook up when you are staying at a campsite.

For heating we have installed a propex gas heating blower which gives instant heat, and a genuine Massport multi-fuel cast iron stove from New Zealand for cosy winter nights. This stove can easily heat the space to toasty temperatures with wood or smokeless coal. The calor gas system is run through a manifold, which has the boiler, cooker and propex heater plumbed into it.

The bus has a large boot and side lockers so there is plenty of secure outside storage.

We have had many great adventures in the bus and are so thankful for all the good fun we have enjoyed with her. She is a real thing of beauty and is looking for a new owner to enjoy all she has to offer.

We are happy to answer any questions you have and can provide more detail about any of the systems we installed. She will come with a years MOT, a spare calor gas bottle, a spare rim and a couple of Bedford coach driving manuals and pamphlets.

The kitchen is equipped with an original 1950’s Kitchenette where we store our dry food and plates etc, and it really complements the space. The cooker/grill/oven (Voyager 4500) combo is really efficient and powerful and has a handy electric ignition and is directly on top of the A** fridge. The kitchen sink is a standard single bowl house sink with a mixer tap that provides both hot and cold water and we used beautiful hand painted tiles for the back splash. All the plumbing is run with quality household plumbing pipes and connectors.

The living space has a solid birch foldable table with storage drawers and is a great sturdy surface for working on and enjoying our meals. We had a custom corner sofa designed, that turns into a full king size bed. It’s a great space to entertain friends and family with lots of space to mingle and enjoy the views from the super panoramic windows. There is also a double bed above the cab of the bus and drops down on a custom frame. We also have two cabinets for our clothes and the bus has an opening door at the back, which is great for good weather days. The two huge opening skylights are really nice for light and ventilation.

The walk in bathroom has a full shower, sink and separation type toilet, with a hidden compartment to store the sawdust, a mirrored cabinet and a full length mirror. Hot water is heated on demand and the large 210 liter fresh water tank means we can shower as much as we like 🙂 The bus also has a 150l grey water tank, with an easily accessible drop point.
