Conversion Description

Up for sale is a beautiful ex-riot van conversion. A 2001 MWB Mercedes Sprinter 411 cdi minibus with only 86,820 miles on the clock, fully serviced and MOT’d until March 2020.

The van has been down-plated to 3.5 tonnes (with weighbridge certificate as evidence) and re-classified as a motor caravan with the DVLA.

Ready to roll on a new adventure without any work required!

This van was lovingly converted for a very comfortable 5 month trip around Europe – reluctantly selling as we have returned home and need to buy a house!

This is a serious off-grid camper, with 2 huge 110Ah gel leisure batteries powered by two 260 W solar panels, providing 520 W of free solar energy and a Redarc battery to battery charger which charges the batteries whilst you drive.

The Redarc battery to battery charger is designed for the Australian outback and can function in the harshest of environments. It’s a seriously tough bit of kit!

We ran a Dometic CRX50 48 litre fridge full time, with more than enough power left over for the 5 touch dimmable LED lights, the 12 volt output socket and two USB ports. We’ve never drained the batteries.

The electric install was completed by a qualified electrician.

Inside the van has been modelled to look and feel like a luxury log cabin – lots of beautiful wood features and walls papered with vintage OS maps (from the 1950s).

It has a full double bed (140 cm x 185 cm), which folds away into a L-sofa for cosy, sociable evenings with a removable boat-style single leg table.

The custom made cushions (made by Cat Upholstery in Bristol) are 12cm deep for a great night’s sleep. The bed also has hinged lids so you can access a huge amount of storage underneath (including the leisure batteries and water storage tank).

The kitchen units were custom built from a mixture of hard and soft woods (to keep the weight / fuel consumption down).

All the kitchen units have been proportionally constructed to ensure that the van maintains a sense of space in order to feel open and uncrowded for a
maximum use of space whilst allowing for a smaller length of van for city parking and driving, whilst also keeping fuel costs down for long range trips.

The kitchen units have 2 inch pear tops, with sealed bark edges for a nice finish. The unit doors are made from a mixture of reclaimed vintage crates and signs for an excellent vintage-cool finish.

The kitchen also features a Smev dual hob gas cooker, the Dometic fridge and mini Belfast sink, with ample storage underneath for all kitchen equipment.

Being an ex-riot van it also has a bunch of other cool security features such as zombie defence deadbolts on doors, bull bars on the front, and front and rear light grills.

The van also benefits from a Rhino modular roof rack system, which is one of the best money can buy.

The rest of the living space – key facts:

– 140 x 185cm fold out double bed, folds back into an L-sofa
– Extensive under-bed storage
– Custom made 12cm cushions
– Single leg, removable table
– 5 touch dimmable, recessed LED lights with a separate on / off switch
– Overhead storage space
– All wood treated with Danish oil for a warm, natural wood finish.
– The whole van has been insulated using 12mm ply board (walls and roof) and double foil insulation materials (we were warm and cosy until late November last year!)
– The floor has been insulated using 35mm ply with a laminated wooden floor on top.
– Black out curtains on all windows, which also help keep it warm and cosy.
– Copper pipe curtain poles

The van has some small parts of rust as you would expect from a van this old, however they are negligible and hardly noticeable. It spent most of its life indoors when the police owned it.

All in all this is a very reliable, well built and maintained ex riot camper van. Viewings welcome but no timewasters please.
