Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions. This information applies to all the campervans on Quirky Campers. For campervan specific information go to the Campervans page. If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch. For full details of the terms and conditions of hire please see our Booking Conditions.
How much does it cost?
Prices vary by campervan, booking length, season and day of the week. Click the ‘BOOK NOW’ button to get an instant quote for your preferred dates and campervan. Seasons are split into four categories; Low, Low-mid, Mid and High. The season calendar defines which dates fall into which season.
We occasionally have special offers, which are available to those on our mailing list and our facebook page. Minimum booking length is three nights.
What is included in the price?
The booking price includes everything you will need to just pick it up and drive off with the exception of bedding. Insurance, breakdown cover, kitchen equipment, cooking gas (if applicable) and much more. See the individual campervan pages for exact details of what else is included. There are also ‘extras’ that can be added on such as bedding, bike rack, awnings, snow chains and BBQs.
What is not included in the price?
Bedding, cleaning, any other ‘extras’ (see below), insurance and breakdown for travel outside the EU (not everyone wants these so excluding them helps to keep the price low, but they can all be added for an additional cost).
What are the extras?
These are campervan specific – availability and cost will vary.
Examples are: bedding, satnav, bike rack, breakfast hamper, camping furniture, cleaning. If there is anything else that you need please just ask and we will see what we can do.
Is insurance included
YES! All our campervans come with specialist comprehensive campervan hirer’s insurance. Please see the ‘Insurance, Breakdown & Drivers’ section on the individual campervan pages for specifics but generally this will cover up to 3 driver aged between 23 and 75 at no cost. The excess (maximum you pay in the event of damage) varies depending on the vehicle and the drivers and can be between £750 and £2000 (most hires are £750 see below for details)
Who does the insurance cover?
Most of our campervans offer the first 3 drivers for free – additional drivers can be added at an extra cost. Unless otherwise stated the insurance covers drivers which meet the following criteria as standard:
Age: between 23 and 75 years young
Nationality*: UK or EU driver’s licenses
Length held: Minimum 2 years
Points*: Up to two minor offenses in the past 5 years is OK (no more than 6 points)
Claims*: No more than 1 claim in the past 5 years
*NOTE: These items are flexible but the campervan owner will need to refer the driver’s details to the insurer and may require some additional information.
International Drivers from most countries can be covered but the excess is likely to be higher. USA, CA, NZ or AU have always been a yes and often with the standard excess.
The full booking form will ask for all the relevant details but feel free to drop us an email if you have any questions. There is an excess of between £750 and £2000 in the event of any damage to the vehicle. This amount is set by the insurer and is dependant on driver age, convictions, claims and country of issue (for a UK driver with a clean license it will be £750).
Breakdown cover is also included – details will be in the Campervan.
What documents do I need to bring when I collect?
Each Driver needs the following:
- License check code – (UK drivers only) each UK driver must send in advance their license check code
- Passport/proof of ID – (Non UK driver only)
- Driving Licence
- Two forms of proof of address – The following documents are acceptable; they must have been issued within the last 90 days and have the same address as the driving licence:
- Utility bills, including water, gas, electric
- Bank statement
- Council tax bills
- TV/internet/telephone bill (Sky/Virgin/BT etc)
- Credit card bill
- Refundable Security Deposit of £250 (1 per booking). This will be refunded within 1 week of the end of the booking and can be paid by cash, PayPal or cheque.
What if I crash or damage something?
The driver will be liable for the insurance excess in the event of any damage to the vehicle. Anything beyond that is covered by the insurance where a claim can be made. The driver is responsible for getting the contact details of any third parties involved.
Obviously we hope you will take care of these beautiful campervan. Minor damage is likely to be overlooked but please do let us know! We reserve the right to charge you for damage to the interior or exterior, fixtures and fittings.
The insurance excess varies from £750 to £2000 dependent on the insurer used and the drivers being insured. The excess amount will be confirmed once final payment has been received and the driver form filled out. The driver will be liable for part or all of the value of the excess in the event of the vehicle being damaged and or a claim being made.
In the event that no driver was operating the vehicle when the damage occurred the first driver will be named as responsible for the vehicle at that time.
Is breakdown cover included?
Yes. All the campervans have breakdown cover including roadside assistance and recovery. If recovery is required you will be returned with the vehicle to the normal pick-up location for that vehicle.
Can I take it to a festival?
Yes this is not a problem. You will need to bring the campervan back in a reasonable condition. A cleaning service is available (see cleaning below) but this doe not cover any damage caused during your stay.
Can I take it to Europe?
That depends. Some vehicles can be taken outside the UK others can’t. For those that are; breakdown and insurance for European travel are included in the standard booking cost. Please note EU travel include Republic of Ireland and the EU27 for other countries please get in touch before you book and provide us with the dates, vehicle and countries to be visited. You must purchase a VOH (vehicle on hire) certificate for travelling outside the UK, these cost £8 and can be ordered from the RAC.
Is there an additional charge for EU travel?
No. However there is a mileage limit on most bookings. You must purchase a VOH (vehicle on hire) certificate for travelling outside the UK, these cost £8 and can be ordered from the RAC.
How many people can travel?
Belted seats range from two to six depending on the campervan. see ‘The Vehicle’ section on the individual campervan page for a description of the seating arrangement for traveling
Can you deliver the van to me?
Many of the campervan owners offer a delivery service. They will quote a price on request to cover their transport costs and time. A rough estimate would be up to £30 + 60p /mile. The value of your enquiry will also be considered.
Can I fit a child seat?
Most of the campervans have passenger seats suitable for child car seats or boosters, some also come with isofixes. Most owners can also provide car seats as an extra if you are travelling from overseas or coming by public transport. Please check the individual campervan pages, there is a section called ‘Travelling with Children’ under ‘Usage’
Do you have beds suitable for babies/children?
We have a wide assortment of bed arrangements from double bunks, to children’s hammocks to hanging cribs. Many of our campervans also have floor space for travel cots – see individual van specifications for more details in particular the ‘usage’ section.
Do you have a hook up?
Many of our campervans have electric hook-up – please check individual campervan pages. A hook up means there is a 240v sockets available in the vehicle and a lead to plug in to campsite electrical point. The socket can be used to power mains voltage appliances such as laptop charge or hairdryer.
Do I need to bring bedding?
Yes unless you decide to purchase it as an extra. It is very reasonably priced at £12 for a full set for 2 adults.
Can I bring my dog/cat/lizard?
Many of our campers are pet-friendly but this is campervan specific so check the van page before you book – you can use the filters . Where pets are accepted it is always as long as they don’t go on the seats or bed and if the campervan is brought back covered in dog hair you will be charge for cleaning (see cleaning).
Is there a toilet or shower?
Please check the individual camper pages – some come with built in shower/toilet cubicles and others can have portapotties or outdoor showers included or to be added as an extra
Is there a mileage limit?
Yes for most bookings.
- Full Price High Season – unlimited mileage
- All other seasons and any discounted bookings:
- 200 miles per day – daily mileage allowance of 200 miles per full day of paid booking
- 20 pence per mile – charge for miles in excess of the total allowance for the booked period
We expect 200 miles per day to cover the vast majority of customers with no additional charges.
Please bear in mind the age, size and cruising speed of the vehicle when planning your journey. Some older and/or larger vehicles travel much more slowly than what you might be used to.
Is there a fuel charge?
No. You pick up the campervan with a full tank and bring it back the same way. If for any reason you were not able to use a nearby fuel station, the owners will fill it up for you and you will be charged for the actual fuel price (not £2.50/litre like some companies!) and a small charge for their time. Do please let us know if this has happened so we don’t inadvertently give it to the next customer with a partially empty fuel tank.
What happens if I return late?
Firstly please let the owners know ASAP as there might be someone waiting to collect it. In this instance we would offer them a pro rata refund for any delay. We reserve the right to charge you for late return at up to £20 per hour but would always try to avoid this. We can sometimes accommodate later returns if there is no immediate subsequent booking, but wouldn’t be able to confirm that until a couple of days before your return.
Kids love campervans and our campervans love kids! Do check the individual van pages for info about seats, beds and anything else which might affect how child-friendly they are. While you’re at it, check out our blog on campervanning with kids – we’ve done lots of campervan with children.
Do I need to clean the campervan?
Quirky Campers don’t do fines however we do offer services. If you want to experience the decadence of a valet service you are more than welcome to and it’s only £25. If you don’t, then you simply need to bring the campervan back clean and free from rubbish. Don’t worry about the outside, we’ll be doing that anyway.
What should I pack?
Our campers all have plenty of storage space so feel free to pack your slippers/top hat/snorkelling equipment (kitchen sink is provided). We include most of the basics and a few little extras. Each van has a detailed list of what it includes as standard so have a peek at those.
Do I need to stay in a campsite?
You say you’re ethical. How?
Quirky Campers takes its social responsibility very seriously. We give 10% of profits to charity, promote holidaying locally, use bio fuels where possible, use ecological cleaning products, encourage you to offset the CO2 of your trip and wherever possible we try to be really nice. Have a look at our about us page for more details.
Why do the dates I want not work?
There a several reasons why dates you are requesting might not be allow.
- The dates are already booked (this will be shown on the availability calendar)
- Your enquiry is too short. Generally the minimum booking period is 3 nights in Low and Mid season and 5 in High but this can vary by campervan and for particular periods
- The pick-up or drop-off day is not allowed. Most campervan owners allow bookings to start and end Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri but not Sat and Sun. This is done to preserve whole weekends because they are by far the most popular portion of the week . If you are booking for 8 days or more this won’t apply
- We haven’t set prices that far in advance yet. We usually set prices for next year in September so if you are looking for next summer in say June you might get an error. Please email us with your enquiry
Where you enquire about dates that don’t fit withing the rules for that particular vehicle the booking system will offer you the next nearest option that does work. If that is not suitable just go back and try an enquiry that is or get in touch for help.
I own a campervan…interested??
Yes please! If you have seen or own a beautiful handmade campervan then we’d be very interested in hearing from you. We’ve had customers enquire from far and wide so whether you’re in Aberdeen or Ashford do get in touch. We’ll send you our owner FAQs and handhold you through the process. See this page for more info.
If you don’t yet own a campervan but are thinking about doing a conversion, we highly recommend hiring one first to find out what will work for you.
Do I need to read all the FAQs?
Only the ones you don’t know the answer to.
