Top 5 dog friendly pubs in the Lake District

The Lake District is arguably one of the most beautiful and idyllic places on earth. Ok, it’s not the Maldives, but it’s maybe the closest we’ll get in Britain. The dog-friendly walks in the Lake District are to die for, and they have the dog-friendly pubs to match. Soak in the views and finish off the day with some pub grub, a pint and a warm, log fire. Some might call this living the dream.

  1. The Wateredge Inn

This place is top of the pops, and mere footsteps away from the edge of Lake Windermere. This pub is so dog-friendly that they have water bowls both inside AND outside the pub. The USP of this pub is the views—goodness me, the views! Prepare to have your mind blown… If it’s simply too much for you just to look at, you can always take a relaxing boat trip and really get stuck in there. Word on the lake is if wag your tail nicely enough, you might even get a handful of treats from the waiters. I assume this applies to dogs too. Oh yeah, there’s a log fire too. It might as well be heaven.

2. Sticklebarn Tavern

Address: GT Langdale, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 9JU

This place jumps in at second place because of their two resident beautiful black Labradors. This suggests that they really do love dogs, letting them live in the pub full-time. As well as the dogs, there’s also a warm fire, and a patio area for people to kick back on if the sun decides to pop its hat on. The Stickleback is really close to some of the most beautiful walks that nature has to offer, and they serve yummy food (try the rude-looking pigs in blankets). All of this, with top beers to boot. This pub—the only one to be run by The National Trust—was simply made for dog owners and dog lovers alike.

3. Old Dungeon Ghyll

Address: Great Langdale, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 9JY

THE OLD DUNGEON GHYLL – A HIKER’S PARADISE

All hail the mecca of the walking world and a place where all your dreams come true… obviously we can’t guarantee that, but anything is possible. This spit and sawdust pub is made for anyone who loves dogs, open fires and long walks along the majestic fells of the Lake District. They have a choice of five real ales, good old-fashioned pub grub and they even allow dogs to stay in some of their hotel rooms. That’s right, this is basically a dog hotel. How cool is that? If you’re really lucky, you might even catch some live folk music when you pop in.

4. The Drunken Duck Inn

Address: Barngates, Ambleside, Cumbria LA22 0NG

UNREAL VIEW FROM THE DRUNKEN DUCK INN PUB

As you would expect, the pub itself is just as good as its name. Set high on the hills between Ambleside and Hawkshead, the pub commands dramatic views of the Lake District fells. Originally a farmhouse, the gorgeous building has been a pub for most of its 300-plus years and it’s one of the best in the Lake District. Dogs are allowed in the bar and the garden, just not in the restaurant, but it’s a small price to pay for delicious food and home-brewed beer.

5. The Golden Rule (aka The Rule)

Address: Smithy Brow, Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 9AS

BEAUTIFUL, SUNNY GARDEN AT THE GOLDEN RULE PUB

This pub calls itself the hidden gem of Ambleside, and they’re not wrong. It’s not as grand as some of the others, but there’s a charm about this place that the aforementioned pubs can only dream of. They can’t touch it. It’s off the beaten track and a bit of a walk up a steep hill, but if you like a challenge, you will be rewarded in due course at The Rule. No background music, no fruit machines, and no television screens to distract you. It’s all about the CAMRA approved beer, the pork pies, the beautiful window boxes and the people. This pub attracts all sorts—mountain bikers, hikers, writers and artists. Oh, and dogs. They like dogs too.
