Designing a campervan for a family of five is no mean feat, but Florence’s boxy shape thanks to her previous life as an ambulance, was just perfect for the job. Her owners wanted to create a campervan that felt like a condensed version of home and to use materials that reflect their little spot in Pembrokeshire - oak trees, Welsh wool, the hedgerows. The result is a beautiful cosy home on wheels.
With a full size 3-ring hob, loads of storage space, a deep counter and a butler sink, cooking will be pure pleasure, a far cry from squatting over a camping stove. Then you can eat in comfort around the large (and beautiful larch) table. The dining table is the centre of the family home and Florence is no different. It’s also perfect for reading, games and route planning your adventure. There’s also an additional side table which pops up between the patchwork chairs, providing a perfect spot for your morning coffee, even whilst the rest of the family sleeps.
Everywhere you look you’ll find beautiful touches inspired by nature and made by hand. Karen (Florence's owner) made the kitchen tiles under tuition of a local potter, imprinted with Cow Parsley from their lane which was in full bloom at the time of Florence's conversion. The chairs were upholstered by hand using natural wool. Look out for the locally produced postcards of birds and the tiny etchings of insects. Florence takes you to the outdoors and brings the outdoors right in.

Conversion StoryFlorence came to us having finished her working life as an ambulance in Yorkshire. We love to see things taking on a new lease of life, and we felt that with her beautiful shape, Florence was perfect for a roomy campervan conversion.
With 3 rapidly growing children, we were looking for something comfortable to sleep us all but also compact enough for us to drive happily; not least because we tend to like to head down the windy roads to the sea.
Our aim was to create a campervan that felt a little like a condensed version of home and a little like the cabin we have been forever planning to build in the woods. We wanted to use materials that reflect our spot in Pembrokeshire - oak trees, Welsh wool, the hedgerows. We are pretty resourceful and handy to a certain degree; we could certainly manage to strip back the interior and remove those stickers but creating the camper we wanted was going to require skills we really don't have.
We knew we had found great people to work with when we came across Rustic Simplicity. It became clear really quickly that they understood what we were hoping to achieve and that they were very much up for the challenge of a less traditional vehicle. Having stripped away miles and miles of redundant wiring, James crafted her interior using reclaimed oak for the cupboards and a beautiful piece of larch for the main table. Anita incorporated our Welsh fabric into the wonderful upholstery, bringing a real sense of comfort and homeliness. Florence has plenty of space for the family, and yet is cosy should the 2 of us ever have the opportunity to sneak her away for a weekend.
Creating the sleeping space we needed was a challenge. Our children are on the cusp of or already into their teenage years and following in their father's 6ft footsteps.
Anita and James developed 6ft long bunk beds which can be built above the double bed, and completely packed away when not in use. This gives us the luxury of much needed head room for our tall folk when sat around the table. With a smaller bed easily assembled for the youngest in the cab (a great cubby hole), we have our space for 5. And there's always the option of a tent beside Florence as they choose not to share our space :)
The kitchen is well equipped with all you need to cook great camping food, and a few luxuries besides. There will always be a little something local in the cupboard: Cafe Mor condiments, Teifi Dragon Coffee and eggs from our hens (when they are laying!).
Morning coffee is one of our favourite times of the day, and the fact that the kitchen is separate to any of the sleeping spaces means that if you are the early riser there's no need to wait for that first cup. The little table between the patchwork chairs, with the side door open is just the perfect spot.
In 6 short but packed months, Florence was transformed from a working ambulance to a beautiful camper van to enjoy and share :) She may not be the youngest vehicle, but has everything you need to explore the countryside at a leisurely pace in comfort. No rush required. We hope you enjoy her as much as we do.
