Conversion StoryRosie is a van made to look like a woodland cabin. She is full of lovingly crafted natural materials. We have gone into the wild in caravans, tents, yurts, and campervans over the years and wanted to build a van that was easy for our family to potter off into the wild in, but was also easy to drive and practical while also feeling gentle and rustic to be in. With all out ideas gathered, we bought Rosie as a panel van in May 2017 and work started on her over the summer of 2017 and through the winter. Rosie is the fourth project that we have worked local with a natural wood carpenter Jesus Sierra, a man with whom we have felled and peeled trees, foraged branches knocked down in winter storms and had many a cup of tea staring at plans and ideas about how to get five of us cosy and housed on wheels. We wanted a van that would work for holidays with children, as we have 3, but that would also be a lovely, luxurious place to stay in.
The van has lots of natural wood, the walls are lined in western redwood cedar and we used some branches of London Plane that fell down in St George's Park in a gale for the supports of the bunk beds. Cedar is both lightweight and beautiful when oiled and so is perfect for vans. It has become one big team project, with all of us working on the van over the last few months; James has done much of the finishing work on the carpentry, including using natural oils to finish the wood, I made the curtains and kitted her out, and we both painted the interior of the van.
The conversion inevitably took longer than we thought it would and Rose was finished about a year after we first bought her. But she has been a labour of love and we hope everyone who stays in her likes her as much as we do. She is a van to have adventures in.
