Conversion Story: We first caught the campervan bug while travelling in Australia for a year, with our first van purchase, Bumble, a Mazda e200, converted while house sitting in Airlie Beach with only a hand saw and sandpaper! And so began the dream of what could be done to convert a van with the right tools and enough time. Fast forward 7 years and Duke was born! Duke is a Fiat Ducato LWB, and was originally a panel van used in the trade, so came fully ply lined, which unfortunately all had to be ripped out due to lack of insulation. Originally the spec was designed to accommodate us and our daughter Willow, but soon after purchasing and mid way through the insulation process, Holly became pregnant with our son Fox. A slight rethink was needed (and the inclusion of a rear belted seat)! Duke is completely hand built, from the beds, seating and kitchen units all made from hardwood ply, to the solar panels and electrics. We were concerned with the idea of space and storage, and so decided not to have a fixed bed in order to maximise this, instead coming up with a unique design for a flip sofa bed. The children's beds caused some headaches, but the final design works very well and ensures maximum usage of the van surfaces! We originally estimated a 3 month turnaround to complete the conversion, laughable even with Holly being pregnant, but the final build took around 18 months, with spells absent during the cold winter months! The finished result is a cosy yet spacious, beautiful home on wheels that has already taken us on a magical tour of France, and some beautiful sites in the UK!
